The Berlin Hackescher Markt S-Bahn station was built in the 19th century as part of Berlin's light rail system and stands out with its clinker brick and terracotta decoration between Alexanderplatz and Friedrichstraße.

Surrounded by "modern" train stations such as Alexanderplatz and Friedrichstraße, the Hackescher Markt S-Bahn station immediately stands out with its clinker brick building and terracotta decoration. The train station was built as early as the 19th century as part of Berlin's light rail system, making it one of the most important buildings in Berlin.

Richly decorated train station with a long history

The twelve-kilometer-long Berlin Stadtbahn was built between 1875 and 1882 and connected Charlottenburg station with Ostbahnhof. The clinker brick structure was built from 1878 to 1882 according to the plans of Johannes Vollmer and was therefore the oldest and also the most beautiful of the eleven stations on the route of the Berlin Stadtbahn.

The station was originally almost 104 meters long and could be entered from both ends. The façade was richly decorated with rosettes and ornaments and the wooden roof originally had a pointed skylight. Then as now, the mainline tracks ran past the outside of the station.

The train runs above, stores and restaurants beckon below

The train station, which was not renamed Hackescher Markt S-Bahn station until 1992 (1882 - 1951: Börse station; 1951 - 1992: Marx-Engels-Platz station), was included in the urban rail renovation in 1994. While the exterior façade was renovated in accordance with the building history, the lamps and tiles were no longer in their original condition. Today, the viaduct arches are home to restaurants, bars, antique stores and fashion stores. While the S-Bahn trains run above, you can eat, drink or go shopping in the viaduct arches on the first floor of the station.
