Since 2001 the International Literature Festival takes place every year in September in Berlin. It focuses on the development of international prose and lyric poetry. During the festival writers from all over the world are in Berlin to present their work to lovers of literature. All texts are read in the original language, interpreters translate the pieces into German.
The texts, poems and verses are distributed thematically into six sections: literatures of the world, reflections, international children's and young adult literature, speak and memory, science and the humanities, and specials. They are presented to the audience in various forms and places. Most of the readings, workshops, talks and exhibitions are set at the Berliner Festspiele but also take place at theatres and other cultural institutions.
All special events of the festival are smaller than the ones in the other sections. Among the special events is the Scritture Giovani. It is a cooperation project of the two most important literature festivals in Europe, the "Festivaletteratura Mantova" and the "Hay Festival". The aim of Scritture Giovani is to promote young European authors.
Another special event is the New German Voices, an evening event presenting talented young German-speaking authors. The Poetry Nights and the Graphic Novel Day are also part of the specials section.
