Walk 19 – Tiergarten Ring Walk (23 km)

Berlin Wall Memorial

Berlin Wall Memorial

The Tiergarten Ring Walk circles around the Große Tiergarten, Berlin’s largest park, as well as, along its eastern route, the historical city centre. The walk passes many of Berlin’s green oases, offering a chance to discover a range of large and small parks and gardens as well as greened city squares. The route not only crosses, for example, the spreading parkland of Volkspark Friedrichshain but also Kollwitzplatz, a magnet for tourists, and incorporates a stretch of sunken gardens constructed in the bed of the former canal “Luisenstädtischer Kanal”.

In addition, nearly half of the entire walk follows Berlin’s rivers and waterways, with the river “Spree”, the canals “Landwehrkanal” and the “Berlin-Spandauer Schifffahrtskanal” as attractive features in the green landscapes along the way. The Tiergarten Ring Walk also highlights politics and culture, passing Schloss Bellevue, the official residence of the German President, the House of World Cultures (“Haus der Kulturen der Welt”, also dubbed the “pregnant oyster”), the Chancellery (identifiable by its grey concrete), the Berlin Wall Memorial, and the Stalinist neoclassical architecture of the houses at Strausberger Platz.
