Between 1961 and 1989, at least 140 people were killed or died in other ways directly connected to the GDR border regime at the Berlin Wall alone.
Today the “Parlament der Bäume” (Parliament of Trees), the Wall memorial in the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus, and other sites created in West Berlin between 1961 and 1989 recall the victims of the Berlin Wall.
Commemorative markers along the Berlin Wall Trail identify places where people were killed attempting to escape or died in other ways connected to the border regime.
