Memorial event for the victims of the attack on Breitscheidplatz

Gedenkkerze

“It is right to not give in to terrorism, and to keep our lives from being overshadowed by it. But this must not lead us to suppress the pain of the victims and of their loved ones. On the contrary, when we stand shoulder to shoulder with the victims, we also stand up against terrorism. […] You are not alone in your grief!”

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, 6 September 2017

Memorial event on 19 December 2021

A memorial event for victims, survivors, and family members was held on the fifth anniversary of the attack at Breitscheidplatz. We as a society came together to remember this tragic event and to reflect.

The memorial event took place in the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtnis-Kirche and was accompanied by organ music and a performance by Jocelyn B. Smith, as well as speeches by the Federal President and the Governing Mayor of Berlin.

At 8:02 p.m., the church bells were rung 13 times for the first time, since a thirteenth victim died in October 2021 as a result of injuries sustained in the attack. His name will be added to the memorial site in the spring of 2022, so that all who died are remembered.

The live images of the memorial site on the steps of the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtnis-Kirche and the livestream of the service inside the church are still accessible online with this link
