Opening a Bank Account
A bank account in Germany is necessary for paying rent and receiving a salary and public services. Since June 2016, German banks are legally obligated to set up a basic bank account for anyone. This account enables you to make transfers online, payments in and out, debit orders, and bank card transactions. Essentially, the basic account is a credit account that cannot be overdrawn. The conditions and prices are different depending on each bank.
How do I open an account?
To open an account, submit the application form to the bank of your choice and present your personal identification card. If you do not possess identification documents, then present your Ankunftsnachweis (Arrival certificate), Aufenthaltsgestattung (Residency permission), or your Duldung (Tolerated status) documents. If you are not yet 18 years old, then you will also require permission from a parent or a legal guardian.
