Hönow Walk

The Hönow Walk starts at the Fairy Tale Fountain in the grounds of Volkspark Friedrichshain public park and ends at the chain of ponds in Hönow near Berlin's eastern city border. Along the way, you can discover many facets of Berlin unfamiliar even to many locals! Friedrichshain and Prenzlauer Berg start directly behind the locality of Hohenschönhausen – which, for many, epitomises large prefab high-rise estates. But who would have thought that "Alt-Hohenschönhausen" (Old Hohenschönhausen) also comprises old residential areas and three small lakes with bathing beaches, beer gardens and nature reserves? Unfortunately, since it is as yet impossible to cross the adjacent industrial park, the walk currently takes a longer detour around it. However, a route through the Marzahn industrial park has already been constructed (see photo). After you cross the main road by the underpass at Raoul-Wallenberg-Straße Station, the landscape changes completely. The route now takes you through the heart of the Marzahn and Hellersdorf localities where, surprisingly, you find park-style designs for residential complexes and large, pedestrian-friendly estates. The walk ends at Hönow subway station, just beyond the chain of ponds that are a nature conservation area.
