Berlin-Beijing anniversary: Chinese New Year concert
The Senate Chancellery and the Chinese Culture Center hosted a gala evening in the Main Hall of the Berlin Town Hall on 23 January 2014 to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The gala kicked off this year’s series of events marking the 20th anniversary of the city partnership between Berlin and Beijing. The evening opened with speeches by Berlin’s Delegate to the Federation and Commissioner for European Affairs, Permanent Secretary Hella Dunger-Löper, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Germany, Shi Mingde, and the Deputy Speaker of the Berlin House of Representatives, Anja Schillhaneck, followed by a varied program performed by musicians from the Chinese Conservatory of Music in Beijing. The conservatory was founded in 1964 and teaches primarily traditional Chinese music.
The city partnership that was launched 20 years ago has become an active program of cooperation. Partnership activities are currently focused on the judiciary, security, school partnerships, vocational education, culture, and sports, and we are expanding cooperation in business and the environment, the administration, and health. An agreement on a three-year program (2014 – 2016) focusing on this cooperation was signed on 13 January 2014 by the Head of the Senate Chancellery, Permanent Secretary Björn Böhning, in Beijing.
