Presidium of the Berlin House of Representatives travels to Istanbul

To mark the 25th anniversary of the city partnership between Berlin and Istanbul, the presidium of the Berlin House of Representatives, headed by Speaker Ralf Wieland, was invited by Deputy Secretary-General Ibrahim Kapaklikaya of the Istanbul city government to visit Istanbul from 9 to 13 June 2014.
Istanbul and Berlin have decided to focus on economic and urban development themes in connection with their city partnership anniversary, and this also applies to the presidium’s visit. The Berlin delegation will start its stay with a visit to the IMM Showcase Center, which is presenting projects and activities of the city of Istanbul. There will also be a meeting with Istanbul’s mayor, Dr. Kadir Topbaş.
Another highlight of the trip will be a tour of the Marmaray Project, the new railroad tunnel under the Bosporus strait that connects the European and Asian continents. The group will also take a look at the modernization of the old Tarlabaşi district, as well as the expansion of local public transportation in Istanbul. A visit to the Turkish-German University (TDU) and meetings with representatives of civil society are also on the agenda.
