Berlin and Buenos Aires set up a climate partnership in November 2012 as part of the project “50 Municipal Climate Partnerships by 2015.” The climate partnership project is being organized and coordinated by the service agency “Communities in One World” (SKEW)/Engagement Global gGmbH.

On the Berlin side, cooperation is taking place under the aegis of the Berliner Energie¬agentur GmbH (BEA) and the Berlin Senate Chancellery and within the framework of our city partnership. Our Argentinean partners are the directorate-general for international relations and the environmental protection agency of the Ministry of Environment and Public Space of the city of Buenos Aires, “Agencia de Protección Ambiental” (APrA).

From 21 to 26 April 2013, three representatives from Buenos Aires traveled to Berlin for an exchange of information and experience. In discussions during telephone conferences held earlier and e-mail correspondence, the decision was made to focus on cooperation on energy management in public buildings. As a result, the visitors’ program concentrated on meetings and discussions with various stakeholders and on various levels of energy management. At the invitation of the Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment, a city tour focusing on this theme gave the visitors a first impression. The Berliner Energieagentur talked to them about energy efficiency, energy conservation, and energy savings performance contracts. During tours of schools, Freie Universität Berlin, and the international cultural center UfA Fabrik, they were able to see concrete examples of how energy use is being reduced. A discussion with energy commissioners from Berlin’s boroughs and state-owned companies gave them an impression of the different approaches available. Talks with representatives of NGOs rounded off the exchange of experience. This dialogue is ongoing, and you can find more information about the climate partnership project here, and from Buenos Aires here and www.buenosaires.gob.ar and www.buenosaires.gob.ar/noticias.
