Making friends through food
One week in Paris and one week in Berlin – that’s all the time that apprentice bakers and pastry cooks have to come up with new German-French bakery and confectionery products.
This exchange project goes back to an initiative by Centre Français de Berlin and the Berlin Chamber of Skilled Trades, in cooperation with Berlin’s guild for bakers and pastry cooks and the Paris vocational school Campus93. Support is being provided by the Franco-German Youth Office, the federal state of Berlin, and the Robert Bosch Foundation. The idea is to give the young participants a first opportunity to get to know the working world abroad and increase their intercultural competence. Encounters are also intended to spark interest in the other culture and create an incentive to improve language skills in German and French.
The primary goal is to create new German-French bakery and confectionery products. A booklet with innovative recipes in German and French will be put together and will hopefully help to generate a new approach to international product development.
The apprentices from the two countries met for the first time in Paris in October 2013, where they spent a week coming up with new products together. The second encounter is taking place in Berlin from 13 to 19 January 2014. Their products will be baked in the academy of the pastry cooks’ guild.
At the end of this encounter in Berlin, the results will be presented at the International Green Week trade show from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, 18 January 2014, in Hall 3.2 and will be tasted and evaluated by a German-French jury.
