The participants: Kinska, Frankenberg, Semotamova, Schnelle

On 16 September 2020, Drama Panorama e. V. and Czech Center Berlin (Tschechisches Zentrum Berlin) organized another edition of New Czech Plays 2020 (Ein Stück: Tschechien 2020), a festival of contemporary Czech drama.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, guest productions were postponed till 2021. However, three staged readings were presented in the gallery of the Czech Center in compliance with the current hygiene rules.

This year’s festival was one of the events celebrating the 25th anniversary of the city partnership between Prague and Berlin and received support from the Berlin Senate Chancellery. In his introductory speech, the Czech Republic’s ambassador to Germany, Tomáš Kafka, stressed the importance of the artistic reflection of reality and said how pleased he was that audiences were still able to enjoy plays, despite all the difficulties.

As in previous years, the New Czech Plays 2020 festival presented three contemporary Czech plays for the first time in German, this time as staged readings. This year’s plays were written by Martina Kinská (and her co-author Radek Schovánek), Dagmar Radová, and Tereza Semotamová.
