How can we conduct collaborative research on collections stemming from colonial or violent contexts? How do we negotiate the future of such objects? Experts from Namibia and Germany will discuss these and other questions as part of a collaborative research and exhibition project entitled ‘Confronting Colonial Pasts, Envisioning Creative Futures’.

For the making of his short film Tracing German-Namibian Collaborations, Berlin filmmaker Moritz Fehr accompanied researchers, curators and artists from Namibia and Germany as they conducted joint research on, and with, objects from the Namibia collection at the Ethnologisches Museum Berlin. The film features our three on-stage guests: Golda Ha-Eiros, Cynthia Schimming and Julia Binter. Hosted by Ndeenda Shivute, they will reflect on the joint research process and the exhibition at the Humboldt Forum. They will offer insights into the artistic research and creative process behind the art installation Untitled, by fashion designer Cynthia Schimming, which can be seen in the newly-opened exhibition, and will discuss the challenges and opportunities of collaborative and transcultural research projects. Central to the discussion will be the future of the objects. Thanks to the generous support of the Gerda Henkel Foundation, 23 of the almost 1,400 objects in the Namibia collection at the Ethnologisches Museum can be taken to Namibia, where representatives from community groups, artists and researchers can investigate the objects’ potential for their society. One of the central themes will be Namibia's fashion and design history, which can be rewritten with the help of these historical objects.
