Ukraine in the Election Year 2019: New Tendencies and Developments in Politics and Civil Society
This year’s presidential elections marked a significant change in Ukrainian politics with political newcomer Volodymyr Zelenskiy winning 73% of the votes and becoming the sixth president of Ukraine. Since Monday, May 20, 2019 Zelenskiy is now officially holding his office and within the first week of his tenure, he initiated and triggered major changes within the Ukrainian political landscape. Instead of the scheduled parliamentary election in late October, Ukrainians will already cast their vote on July 21, 2019. Several new parties will have the chance to move into the Verkhovna Rada and to disrupt the current political power constellations. Ukraine’s civil society is thereby also standing in front of new developments and challenges.
The conference will address the following questions along three informative panels: How could Ukraine’s foreign political strategy as well as its security strategy change under its new presidency? Which domestic reforms will be maintained and which areas are likely to show further progress? Another focus will be set on new tendencies in political communication strategies during the presidential election campaign and how reforms can be communicated to the population.
Moreover, we are happy to present the first results of our qualitative study on German and Ukrainian think tanks and to discuss the question on how the support of Ukrainian civil society could be made more sustainable.
The conference is taking place within the framework of the project Platform for Analytics and Intercultural Communication (PAIC) which is conducted in close cooperation with the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation (DIF, Kyiv) and the think tanks development and research initiative think twice UA (Kyiv) and the kind support of the Federal Foreign Office.
