Alter Markt, Potsdam City Palace, Neuer Garten, Sanssouci Park and Palace, New Palace, and more
The bicycle-tour starts at Potsdam Central Station. First stop is the Old Market with Schinkel's St. Nicholas' Church and the rebuilt Potsdam City Palace, seat of the state parliament of Brandenburg since 2014. Further sights in the old town are the magnificent baroque New Market square with its stately bourgeois houses, the Dutch Quarter and the Brandenburger Straße, the main shopping street filled with many shops and cafés.
"Prussian Arcadia" by bike
In the north-eastern part of Potsdam participants will see the famous border checkpoint Glienicke Bridge where Americans and Soviets exchanged captured spies during the Cold War. The tour along the banks of the River Havel offers impressive scenic views of the palaces and gardens of the so-called "Prussian Arcadia". Cecilienhof Palace in the New Garden is a world-historically important place. It was here that in 1945 after the end of the Second World War Truman, Stalin and Churchill took important decisions that shaped Germany and Central Europe for decades to come. Nearby are the log houses of the Russian Colony of Alexandrowka, a 19th century architectural monument to the friendship between the Houses of Hohenzollern and Romanov.
On the bike through the gardens
Park Sanssouci with its famous Prussian palaces and elaborate gardens is another highlight on this bike tour. Frederick the Great’s Sanssouci Palace is the most popular sight in the park, towering over beautifully sloping vineyard terraces. Participants will also see the Renaissance style Orangery Palace nearby and the largest and probably most impressive building of Sanssouci Park, the baroque New Palace on the western side.
