Whether it was during his time at Eton College or as an imperial policeman of the colonial powers in Burma, whether he washed dishes, worked as a journalist or fought Franco’s regime in Spain – throughout his life, George Orwell had a fine sense of authoritarian behaviour and rejected in in all its forms. 1984 is a satirical exaggeration and at the same time a truthful account of a world where the desire for power of a few has prevailed and become structurally consolidated. In his adaptation of the novel, director Luk Perceval traces the resistive strength of two lovers under conditions of ubiquitous distrust, propagandist insanity and physical pain. What lies behind the pursuit of power? And to what extent is the order that we live in a reflection of ourselves?
