    The Mirror

Gravity & Other Myths' new work, The Mirror, is the company's most physically and conceptually demanding challenge to date. The artists explore the idea of self-love and the value we place on our outer self versus our inner self. The show, conceived by the ensemble and its visionary artistic director Darcy Grant during a year in lockdown, invites the audience to take a look in the inner and outer mirror. And, in doing so, asks the questions that are always on the minds of both those on stage and those in the audience: What supposed expectations of the other person do we sense? What do they trigger in us? What does authenticity mean in the digital age?

"The Mirror explores how external forces shape and influence us - and in doing so, takes a hard look at what entertainment means," says Darcy Grant. "And to do that, we use a very modern form of a very traditional genre: circus. The highest level of dance and acrobatics is accompanied by contemporary design and profound questions that are also directed at the audience. What do modern people find entertaining? What does each of us want to show the world? Is it what you want?"

Impressive Acrobatic Choreography and Strong Personalities

Gravity really does seem to be just a myth when the artists of Gravity & Other Myths take the stage. Conceptual sophistication has become their trademark. In their performances, nuanced imagery emerges, brought to life by high-energy acrobatic choreography. At the center, however, are always the warmth and personalities of the artists, who together form a sworn ensemble and allow us to share in their world with a great deal of honesty, humor and vulnerability.

"The world is full of examples of inaccessible art by brilliantly incomprehensible masters, but also entertainment that forces itself on you" says Darcy Grant. "Together, we're looking for staging opportunities that soften and challenge this often very hard boundary between these two worlds, and in doing so, we inevitably think about how we see ourselves in this equation."

How can we go beyond our physical limits while asking ourselves why we are doing it in the first place? How much does our self-love depend on how we are perceived by others?

The Mirror is both an allusion to the extremes people are willing to go to please others and a reflection on the hidden parts of ourselves that make us unique.
