Véréna Paravel & Lucien Castaing-Taylor: Breathing Matter(s)

This summer, silent green is dedicating a comprehensive retrospective solo exhibition to the two artists Véréna Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor with Breathing Matter(s), which traces the duo's artistic development and presents their most important works.

With their first joint work Leviathan, Paravel and Castaing-Taylor suddenly became internationally renowned in 2012. Few artists have so radically renewed the cinematic space of experience in recent years. Formally, aesthetically and programmatically, their visually powerful works break down the boundaries between anthropology, documentary film and visual art and shake up traditional, anthropocentric orders of representation and visibility.

Cinematic immersion, a strong focus on sensual and physical perception and deep immersion in lived experiences are at the heart of her works - be it the bloody everyday life of deep-sea fishing, the repulsive fantasies of a cannibal, the surreal dreamscapes of the world's most talkative sleep talker or the sublime visions of the pulsating interior of the human body.

Accordingly, the two radically depart from the narrative and formal conventions of the documentary genre. No instructive information, no conversation, no commentary, no narration that creates distance from what is shown or classifies it. They do not follow a script or defined research questions, but are guided by what they see and feel.

Admission to the exhibition is free. A supporting program presents additional perspectives on the topics dealt with in the exhibition
