The "Bee" theme island sheds light on the anatomy of the bee and the life of bee colonies. It also tells the cultural history of beekeeping from the Stone Age to the present day and is dedicated to modern beekeeping. At the apiary, chronologically arranged replicas of beehives, honey presses and honey extractors round off the range of topics. Interactive elements, such as a moving model of the bee dance or a large annual wheel on the bee year, invite visitors to discover.
The "Biodiversity" theme island encourages visitors to reflect. It is explained what biodiversity is, why the diversity of species continues to decrease and what one can do about it as an individual. TheDüppel Museum Village is presented as an example of how biodiversity can be preserved: The cultural landscape with its mosaic of different habitats as well asold useful plants anddomestic animal breeds significantly increases local biodiversity. And it conveys that a rethink of industrial agriculture is urgently needed.
Comprehensive redesign of the outdoor area
The two themed islands are the first step towards a comprehensive redesign of the outdoor area in Düppel Museum Village, whosepermanent exhibition in the reception building has already been completely overhauled in 2018. With the aim of opening the open-air museum all year round, as well as expanding the levels of information and mediation for visitors, numerous new topics are to be offered in the process. Four of these will be presented in the form of themed islands in the outdoor area.
In the coming years, a theme island on "Wood and Clay Construction" and one on "Experimental Archaeology" will follow. Other themes, including "Everyday Worlds", "Plant Fibres" and "Spinning, Weaving, Sewing", will be presented in future in the form of small exhibitions in some of the reconstructed medieval houses in order to keep the village square as free of signs as possible and thus preserve its historical appearance.
Note: Masks are not compulsory in the outdoor area! Please wear a medical mouth-nose protection in the ticket area or in the queue and observe the applicablehygiene regulations.
