Shepard Fairey: Photo Synthesis

From the famous Hope posters to the Obey Giant posters: Shepard Fairey has shaped visual culture like no other.

His works transcend the boundaries of classic street art and graphic design and have become global symbols of activism and social change. With over 140 murals, countless stickers and posters, and works in major museums, he has developed a visual language that provokes and inspires at the same time.

The exhibition Photo Synthesis, on view from October 17, 2025, to March 8, 2026, at Fotografiska Berlin, traces his artistic journey from his early poster and paste-up experiments to screen prints, digital collages, and a body of work created specifically for this exhibition. It shows how photography has shaped Fairey's artistic development. By combining significant works with new pieces, it highlights an artistic language that continually redefines the urban landscape.

Shepard Fairey's art is not limited to murals. His works have become symbols of activism and social change. He made his big breakthrough in 2008 during the US presidential campaign with his iconic portrait of Barack Obama and the rapid rise of the Obey fashion brand.

The exhibition at Fotografiska Berlin combines key works with pieces created especially for this exhibition. It traces Fairey's development: from his first poster and paste-up experiments to screen printing and digital collage. Photography is always the starting point.
