Tchaikovsky Ballet Festival: Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake with Fairy Tale Teller

"The Nutcracker", "Sleeping Beauty" and "Swan Lake" are regarded as the epitome of classical Russian dance theatre and are among the core pieces of the ballet repertoire. A storyteller guides the audience through the story so that even the youngest ones can follow the content of the danced scenes.

The Tchaikovsky Ballet Festival for the whole family

As timeless masterpieces, "The Nutcracker", "Sleeping Beauty" and "Swan Lake" have enchanted young and old theatregoers alike for generations. The performances of the Russian National Ballet are based on the original libretti and choreographies of Marius Petipa (the "father of classical ballet") and Lev Ivanov.

The Russian National Ballet cultivates the best ballet tradition with soloists from the famous Russian Academic Theatres in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Perm and Ekaterinburg. It presents fairy-tale fabrics full of grace, elegance and fascinating lightness. With the highest technical precision (the role of Odette in "Swan Lake" is one of the most demanding and strenuous of the classical ballet) the ballet ensemble takes the audience into a world of weightlessness and poetry. The fascinating splendour of stage design and around 300 costumes, music and dance make these ballet events a true celebration!

Sleeping Beauty

The royal couple must wait many years until their most fervent wish is fulfilled: the birth of a child! Six fairies are invited to the christening, who will bring gifts and good wishes to Princess Aurora. Out of anger that she has not received an invitation, the evil fairy Carabosse suddenly appears and curses the child. He is supposed to stab himself on a spindle and die on his 16th birthday. A fairy manages to soften the curse: Aurora will not die, but only fall into a hundred-year sleep...

"Sleeping Beauty" is considered to be the most successful of all ballets from the great tsarist era and has also delighted audiences for more than 100 years. Tchaikovsky considered his "Sleeping Beauty" to be his best ballet.

Swan Lake

The young prince's son Prince Siegfried is to marry in order to preserve the dynasty. The beautiful swan girl Odette appears to him in the moonlight on the shore of Swan Lake. Prince Siegfried falls in love with the enchanting creature and swears eternal allegiance. But Odette is under an evil spell and is only allowed to take on human form at night for a few hours. At the ball the next day, Prince Siegfried is to choose his bride. The magician Red Beard lets his own daughter appear in the shape of Odette to deceive the prince. The blinded prince Siegfried unintentionally breaks his promise of loyalty. When he recognizes this, he asks for forgiveness, which is also granted to him. In the end he defeats the evil sorcerer, so that the triumph of love becomes perfect.

Longing, loneliness and jealousy, anger, pain and happiness - the great sensations can be expressed with body language as fervently and overdimensionally as one would never believe from the spoken word. This applies to ballet in general and to Swan Lake in particular.

The Nutcracker

Clara gets a nutcracker from her godfather Drosselmeyer on Christmas Eve. In the night she dreams how the nutcracker comes to life and is attacked with other dolls by the army of the mouse king. With Clara's help, the nutcracker wins and turns into a prince who takes Clara with him to the realm of sweets. The journey takes her through an enchanted snow country to Zuckerburg Castle, where the sugar fairy organizes a party in honour of her guests.

The ballet classic after E. T. A. Hoffmann's story "Nutcracker and Mouse King" is popular with children and adults alike. The overture, the dance of the snowflakes or the flower waltz are firmly rooted in the Christmas sound world.
