Classic history in a new guise

Anna Karenina's story is about a woman's inner conflict between passion, maternal care and convention. Tolstoy's story is just as relevant today as it was in the 19th century. With the help of the art of dance, Eifman conveys in his performance the drama of a woman being reborn. In the choreographer's opinion, it was the passion and the "original impulse" that led to the breaking of social norms, destroyed maternal love and destroyed Anna Karenina's inner world.

Elegant interpretation of Tolstoy's novel

The ensemble has been proving for years that ballet has great justification as a medium for telling stories. To the sounds of Tchaikovsky, Eifman lets the heroine hope, love, despair, regret and ultimately even lose her sense of reality. The choreographer points out that his ballet is about the present and not about past epochs: The timeless emotional statement of the performance and the obvious parallels to reality do not leave the contemporary audience indifferent. The outstanding technical level of the dance ensemble and the choreography by Boris Eifman present all the psychological peripeths of the Tolstoic novel.

"What is more important: to maintain the universal illusion of the harmony of duty and emotion or to devote oneself to true passion?"

The ballet is a special field for the realization of psychological dramas, it offers the possibility to penetrate into the subconscious: Every new performance is a search for the unknown. Anna's passion for Wronskij destroyed the familiar, because two people lived in her: outwardly a lady of the world as they knew Karenin, her son and her surroundings. And then a woman who was deeply immersed in the world of her passions. What is more important: to maintain the universal illusion of the harmony of duty and emotion, or to indulge in true passion? Do we have the right to destroy a family, to deprive a child of maternal care in favour of carnal desires? These questions did not leave Tolstoy alone in the past, and even today they cannot be ignored. And there are no answers! There is the insatiable desire to be understood in life and death..." Boris Eifman

For decades, Eifman and his ballet company have been setting standards in telling new stories in and with dance, expanding the expressive possibilities of classical ballet and thus combining music, narrative and dance into a new unity. For this he is famous and celebrated all over the world.
