Mikko Franck

The Finnish conductor Mikko Franck shows us the beauty of the music of his homeland with powerful imagery. The archaic melodies of Jean Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony evoke associations with the austere beauty of the Finnish landscape – particularly in the finale, which was inspired by the sight of swans flying overhead. EsaPekka Salonen’s Karawane, in which – according to the composer – heavy animals “lost in time and space” move “through strange landscapes”, also has mystical strength. From Einojuhani Rautavaara, we will hear one of the best-known 20th-century settings of the requiem
