Face masks mandatory at Christmas markets in Berlin
Visitors to Christmas markets in Berlin are obligated to wear a protective face mask because of the Coronavirus pandemic. However, this does not apply to markets opening under the 2G rule, as the Berlin Senate decided on Tuesday (October 26, 2021).
Information concerning Coronavirus vaccination.
Christmas markets opening in the 2G model are only open for visitors with proof of vaccination or proof of recovery from a previous Coronavirus infection. Children under the age of 12, for whom no vaccinations are offered at the moment in Germany, are also allowed to visit 2G Christmas markets, as are people who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons. Face masks are not mandatory at 2G Christmas markets, where access will be controlled at all entry points.
Christmas markets do not have to open under 3G conditions
At all Christmas markets where 2G rules do not apply, which is likely to be the majority of Christmas markets due to the lack of access controls, everyone has access, as Finance Senator Matthias Kollatz explained after the Senate meeting. The 3G rule (requiring proof of vaccination, proof of recovery, or a negative test) does not apply. Unvaccinated persons do not have to prove negative tests.
2G or 3G rules for indoor restaurants and huts at Christmas markets
Conditions are different for indoor restaurants located within the grounds of Christmas markets. There, organizers can choose whether to use 2G or 3G rules. Unvaccinated people would only be allowed to enter under 3G conditions and would have to prove a negative Covid-19 test result. Such tests are are available for a fee at Coronavirus test centers.
Several Christmas markets to open under 2G conditions
Even before the Senate's decision, several organizers announced that they would open their Christmas markets under 2G conditions. These include the popular Christmas market at Gendarmenmarkt, the Christmas market at Breitscheidplatz, and the Christmas market at the Spandau Citadel.
