New school year begins again under Corona conditions
After about six weeks of summer holidays, things are getting serious again for a good 460,000 pupils in Berlin: the new school year starts today. It is already the third in the Corona pandemic.
Directive, general rules of conduct and more: Measures against the corona virus.
Therefore, hygiene measures, wearing masks, spacing, air filters and regular rapid tests are again the order of the day in schools. Three tests are mandatory in each of the first three weeks of school. Despite the recent increase in the number of corona cases, the Senate is relying on face-to-face teaching, which, in contrast to last school year, is compulsory for all pupils.
Mobile vaccination teams are to be deployed at the upper secondary schools from Monday. Their offer is initially aimed at almost 70,000 young adults who are already of age. 16- and 17-year-olds who can show permission from their legal guardians will also receive a vaccination offer at these schools. All other pupils from the age of 12 can be vaccinated at the vaccination centres or by doctors in private practice. A nationwide campaign at all schools is not planned yet.

A total of 376 460 pupils from general education schools (2020: 369 841) and 87 360 pupils (2020: 83 264) from vocational schools will start the new school year on Monday. Around 32 000 teachers and thousands of educators are looking after them. Filling 2440 permanent teaching positions was difficult, as it is every year, but according to Education Senator Sandra Scheeres (SPD), all but 80 positions were filled. The trade union for education and science (GEW) points to the increasing number of lateral entrants who are not sufficiently trained. A training offensive for teachers is urgently needed.
