The incidence of corona rose slightly again in Berlin over the weekend. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported 68.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the past seven days on 17 May 2021, following 66.9 cases on Sunday.
However, no new deaths were reported to the RKI. The number of people who died from or with the infection thus remains unchanged at 3399. 166,300 people are considered to have recovered. Within one day, 91 people were newly infected, bringing the total to 175,283 since the beginning of the pandemic. The RKI pointed out that it should still be taken into account when interpreting the case numbers that fewer people visit a doctor on public holidays, which also means that fewer samples are taken and fewer laboratory tests are carried out.
First relaxations as of Wednesday
If the incidence value remains below 100 for five working days in a row, relaxations are possible on the day after next. In Berlin, this would be possible for the first time on Wednesday. The Senate wants the first steps to be taken as early as then. Museums and memorials, for example, could then reopen under certain conditions. From the Friday before Whitsun, outdoor cafés and restaurants would be allowed to serve guests again. This was decided by the Senate on Friday.
