Corona rapid tests for schools and day-care centres
In the future, new types of Corona rapid tests will be used at Berlin's schools and day-care centres.
Pupils, teachers and other employees at schools as well as nursery school teachers are to be tested twice a week for the Corona virus in this way, as Education Senator Sandra Scheeres (SPD) announced on Tuesday (09 February 2021) after the Senate meeting.
Self-test on a voluntary basis
The tests, which anyone can do themselves, are therefore voluntary. In case of a positive result, a so-called PCR retesting with laboratory evaluation is required. The Senate wants to provide capacities for this, according to the report. According to Scheeres, the self-tests will expand Berlin's testing strategy. Initially, 32 million euros have been budgeted for this in the coming months. In addition, 240,000 quick tests for Berlin day-care centres are already being delivered to the districts, which must be carried out by trained personnel. These tests are also intended for day-care centre employees.

According to Scheeres, the self-tests are to expand Berlin's testing strategy. Initially, 32 million euros have been budgeted for this in the coming months. In addition, 240,000 quick tests for Berlin's day-care centres are already being delivered to the districts, which must be carried out by trained staff. These tests are also intended for day-care centre employees. "Self-tests can make an important contribution to corona prevention," Scheeres explained. "That's why we are making regular and comprehensive self-testing possible at schools and daycare centres." However, there are no plans to test kindergarten children.
70 million euros for schools and daycare centres
A total of 70 million "support package for schools and day-care centres in the pandemic" decided by the Senate also includes additional mobile air purification devices for schools. In addition to the existing 1200 devices, 2800 more will be purchased by Easter. Another 3500 are to be put into operation by summer. A total of more than 15 million euros has been budgeted for this. It will also be possible to finance air purification devices for day-care centres if the responsible bodies apply for it.
700,000 additional FFP2 masks and medical masks for schools
In addition, the state is providing another 700,000 FFP2 masks as well as medical masks for the staff in every school, day care centre, day care centre for children as well as inpatient facilities for youth and integration assistance. Fever thermometers for schools and day-care centres are also being purchased on a large scale.
Mobile devices and tablets for teachers and students
The package also includes 12,000 mobile devices for educational staff at schools to stream video conferences. The Senate is making an additional good eleven million euros available for this purpose. Berlin has already financed 50,000 tablets for pupils from state funds. Certain learning assistance offers, not least those for disadvantaged children, will be relaunched or expanded, Scheeres added. The so-called holiday school, for example, will also be offered during the Easter holidays.
