Fireworks ban: Senate designates 56 prohibited zones
The Berlin Senate has banned New Year's Eve fireworks and firecrackers in many places in the city.
The list published on Wednesday (23 December 2020) covers 54 areas, including large parts of Sonnenallee and Karl-Marx-Strasse, but also the Märkische Viertel, Altstadt Spandau, Simon-Dach-Kiez and Wrangelkiez. In addition, there are the two known prohibited zones from last year.
Fireworks ban in parks, streets and neighbourhoods
Also affected by the ban are Mauerpark, Görlitzer Park and Treptower Park. In addition, there are large squares and landmarks such as Potsdamer Platz, Breitscheidplatz and the Brandenburg Gate. For Interior Senator Andreas Geisel (SPD), infection control takes precedence on 31 December: "Firecrackers in groups on the street pose considerable risks to our health. The employees in the hospitals are already working at the limit," Geisel said, according to a statement. Accordingly, his appeal to Berliners is: "Stay at home, welcome the New Year in a small circle and refrain from fireworks and firecrackers."
It is also forbidden to set off fireworks and other pyrotechnics in the prohibited zones already designated last year on Alexanderplatz and around Pallasstraße. Last year's ban in the two areas was based on possible dangers from fireworks and numerous attacks on police officers and firefighters in previous years.
Violations are consistently punished
The police will consistently punish violations, Geisel continued. Even if not every illegal firecracker throwing can be prevented. According to the catalogue of fines for Berlin's infection protection ordinance, fines of between 500 and 1000 euros are threatened for illegal firecrackers. The controls by the police should facilitate that sale of fireworks is banned in Berlin and only a fraction of people will be out with fireworks at all. The Senate had included the sales ban in its new ordinance of 14 December. On Tuesday, Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer (CSU) banned the sale of New Year's Eve fireworks throughout Germany.
