General mask obligation in Berlin schools
As of next Wednesday (November 18, 2020), a general obligation to wear masks in class will also apply to all classes at secondary schools in Berlin as well as vocational schools - regardless of which Corona level a school is currently in.
A breathing mask is held in the hands.
Directive, general rules of conduct and more: Measures against the corona virus.
In addition, the start of classes is to be spread over two hours, so that not all students are on the trains and buses at the same time in the morning, as the Senate Administration for Education announced on Friday. "In the current situation, this is a further important step towards being able to maintain regular lessons under pandemic conditions," announced Senator Sandra Scheeres (SPD). The obligation to wear masks also applies during lessons and on the entire school premises. The schools are responsible for the organizational implementation of the extended start of lessons.
Previously, compulsory masks were only required in all classes and on the entire campus if a school was classified in the second highest level Orange in the Senate's Corona Step Plan due to a high incidence of infection. Now it is generally mandatory.
"Berlin takes into account the finding that the number of infections has continued to rise, especially in the 15 to 19-year-old age group - due to the autumn vacations," was the reason given. During the two weeks off, many young people met outside of school, which increased the incidence of infection. In order to implement the measure, the Senate wants to deliver more masks to the schools from the middle of next week. In the past week already approximately half a million mouth nose covers had been made available.
For daycare centers and elementary school, however, everything remains the same. For the time being, there will still be no compulsory masks. However, a spokesman for the Senate administration said that they are keeping an eye on developments.
