Hundreds of police officers on Corona duty

Over the weekend, the Berlin police used hundreds of task forces to check whether people were abiding by the Corona rules. About 1000 police officers were to be on duty during the day, half of them from the federal police. "We are on the road until late into the night," said a police spokesman on Saturday. Controls were also planned for Sunday (October 25, 2020).

On Wilmersdorfer Strasse, federal policemen monitor compliance with the obligation to wear masks.

Nationwide, more and more people have recently become infected with the novel coronavirus. According to the Robert Koch Institute on Saturday morning, the health authorities in Germany reported around 14 700 new corona infections. That is more than ever before since the beginning of the pandemic in Germany. The Berlin state government had tightened the regulations. Since the weekend, for example, mouth and nose protection must be worn at markets and on ten shopping streets. In addition, even stricter upper limits apply to private gatherings.
A police spokesman said in an initial overview in the afternoon that the majority of people in the hotspots had adhered to the obligation to wear masks. For about 10 to 20 percent this was different. People were given verbal warnings. A spokesman for the federal police observes a similar situation: "Only in very few cases have administrative offence proceedings had to be initiated so far."
The controls also target illegal parties and the gastronomy sector, most of which have a night-time curfew. Senator of the Interior Andreas Geisel (SPD) and Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer (CSU) had agreed on the joint deployment.
