Guidelines: Christmas markets could be allowed to open despite Corona
Despite rising numbers of infections, Christmas markets in Berlin should be allowed to open in this Corona year as well.
The economic administration has drawn up a set of rules and regulations for this purpose, which the Senate will discuss and possibly adopt at its meeting on Tuesday (October 20, 2020). According to a spokesperson on Monday, the "orientation guide" includes, among other things, compulsory masks and upper limits for visitors, which are to be set individually depending on local conditions.
The specifications also include access control, clear separation of catering areas, workplace health and safety for employees and adequate disinfection facilities. Wherever possible, the stores are to be fenced off. Private security services should control the enforcement of the rules. Initially, the "Berliner Morgenpost" and "Tagesspiegel" had reported on the concept.
In response to a dpa inquiry, Senator for Economic Affairs Ramona Pop said that in her view it would make sense to make masks mandatory in the markets because the necessary minimum distance could often not be maintained there. According to her spokesperson, the economic administration is in favor of waiving certain user fees for market operators and traders in view of the difficult situation.
