On Thursday, 498 new infections were recorded, the highest increase within 24 hours since the beginning of the pandemic. However, since significantly more tests are now being carried out, the figures from spring are only comparable with the current ones to a limited extent.
The ratio of new infections in relation to the number of inhabitants, which is important for travel to other German states, remains above the critical threshold of 50 in the capital: 56.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants were registered in the past seven days. This is once again an increase compared to Thursday (52.8).
Among the districts, Neukölln stands out in particular with 472 reported corona cases in the past week; the so-called seven-day incidence is thus 143.1, followed at some distance by Mitte (85.8 cases per 100,000/7 days) and Tempelhof-Schöneberg (72.9). Since the beginning of the pandemic, 234 people in Berlin have died in connection with the novel pathogen, and more than 14,000 are considered to have recovered. The total number of cases now stands at 17,555.
So far, three percent of intensive care beds are occupied by Covid-19 patients. However, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the proportion of older age groups among those infected has been rising nationwide since the beginning of September. The risk of severe disease progression is higher among them than among young people. Infected patients often do not need to be hospitalized until around a week after diagnosis. According to information from Friday, the Charité is trying to free up intensive care beds because of Covid-19.

Since last Saturday, new regulations for the containment of the virus, such as the obligation to wear masks in offices, have been in effect in Berlin. From this Saturday on a curfew hour is added among other things. Until however new measures could be reflected in the registration numbers, it takes some time. Newly reported infections are an indication of how strong the virus was in society about a week ago because of the delays until diagnosis.
