The R-value shows how many people an infected person infects on average. It refers to infections 8 to 13 days ago. If the value remains stable above 1 for a longer period of time, there is a risk of another exponential increase in the number of cases. Then an infected person infects more than one other person. The reproduction rate is one of three indicators in the Berlin traffic light rating system for evaluating the occurrence of infection: If the R-value is above 1.2 at least three times in a row, this traffic light shows red.
