USA confiscate protective masks for Berlin
In the Corona crisis, Berlin has to do without an urgently needed supply of 200,000 medical protective masks.
The reason: The USA confiscated the goods in Bangkok, as Berlin's Interior Senator Andreas Geisel (SPD) announced on April 3, 2020. According to him, the masks of class FFP-2, which can protect against infection with the corona virus, were intended for the Berlin police. Berlin had ordered and paid for them from a US company. According to research by the newspaper "Tagesspiegel", they were manufactured in China, official details were not available.
Geisel harshly criticized the action of the USA
"We consider it an act of modern piracy," he explained. "This is not the way to deal with transatlantic partners. Even in times of global crisis, Wild West methods should not prevail." He said the German government must press the United States to comply with international rules.
Berlin is not alone with the loss of masks
Recently, French politicians, for example, accused the USA of buying up supplies of protective masks in China for France. In addition, the U.S. administration has obliged the American conglomerate 3M by law to supply the U.S. with as many N95 respiratory masks as possible, such as those used in hospitals. The group also manufactures in China.
According to the new list of fines, anyone in Berlin who violates the restrictions on exit due to the spread of the coronavirus will have to pay up to 500 euros.
In the Corona crisis, retailers in Berlin and Brandenburg are calling on supermarket customers to wear face masks when shopping.
