Coronavirus: Events in big theatres and operas cancelled
Philharmonie, Deutsche Oper, Staatsoper: To contain the coronavirus, all planned events in the large halls of the state theatres, opera houses and concert halls in Berlin will be cancelled.
Senator for Culture Klaus Lederer (Left) announced on 10 March 2020 that this decision would apply for the time being until the end of the Easter holidays, i.e. until 19 April. He also recommended that the large private theatres should proceed in this way.
Houses with less than 500 places initially decide independently
For events in smaller venues and halls with up to 500 listeners, the risk assessment is initially the responsibility of the respective institutions, which should follow the guidelines of the Robert Koch Institute. Anyone who is acutely ill or belongs to a risk group should in any case refrain from attending events altogether.
Philharmonie, Deutsche Oper, Staatsoper Unter den Linden are affected
Especially the big houses like the Philharmonie with 2250 seats or the Deutsche Oper for 1885 listeners could be considerable. Among others, the Komische Oper with 1190 seats, but also the Deutsches Theater with 600 seats and the Staatsoper Unter den Linden with 1300 seats are affected. "For us, the decision is regrettable but understandable," said the spokeswoman of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Kirsten Hehmeyer. She added that one must now think about how to refund tickets, for example.
