A competence center for digitalization is also being built there. "This will make Berlin more important in the global production network," explained Mercedes-Benz Board of Management member Jörg Burzer. In total, the company is investing a low three-digit million euro amount in the plant located in the district of Marienfelde over the next six years.
"This means we can offer our colleagues here at the Berlin location very good prospects for the future," said Burzer. However, he could not yet say whether all 2,300 jobs would be saved. He referred to the job security that Daimler had agreed with the employees until 2030.
Just a year ago, workers' councils and the industrial union IG Metall had feared that half of the jobs at the Berlin plant could be eliminated. On Wednesday, however, the union announced that this Thursday would bring good news for the employees.
