Number of visitors to Berlin on the rise again
Berlin attracted significantly more guests this summer than in the previous year.
Participants on a city tour in front of the Brandenburg Gate - about two-thirds of the pre-Corona level overnight stays were achieved in the summer.
Since April, hotels and guesthouses have registered more overnight stays than in the respective month of the previous year. In August and September, about two-thirds of the pre-Corona level was reached, according to figures from the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office.
Tourism remains stricken by the pandemic
Berlin tourism, however, remains severely stricken by the pandemic, the office announced on Wednesday (November 10, 2021). To date, the entire year of 2021 registers a significant minus, even compared to 2020. From January to September, there were with 8.5 million overnight stays in Berlin, about 21 percent fewer than in the same period last year.
Berlin experienced pre-pandemic tourism boom
Until the pandemic hit, Berlin had experienced an unprecedented tourism boom. 2019 was the 17th record year in a row. The number of overnight stays per year rose to around 34 million. In 2020, it was only a good 12 million. Tourist overnight stays have only been allowed again this year since June. Before that, only business trips were possible for months. Occupancy rates at Berlin hotels are at 26 percent so far this year - down from 63 percent in the pre-Corona comparative period of 2019.
