"We currently expect full 4G coverage for the remaining stations and tunnel sections by the end of 2022," the responsible network provider Telefónica informed the dpa upon request. 4G is currently the fastest mobile phone standard that is widely available in Germany.
"Of course, we are continuously working on further development," it said. "However, the success of our expansion depends on the approval of our plans by the relevant authorities." These processes are very time-consuming, Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) said on the subject. "The Corona pandemic from March 2020 has also led to delays."
Customers of the Telefónica brand O2 have been able to surf the internet and make phone calls with their mobile phones almost everywhere in the U-Bahn since 2016 - even away from the stations equipped with W-LAN. In 2019, BVG agreed with Telefoníca on the expansion to make reception possible for Vodafone and Telekom customers as well. So far, sections of the U2, U4, U5, U55, U6, U7 and U8 lines have been upgraded accordingly. Exactly on which sections, however, remained open at first.
