Berlin Christmas market organisers plan cautiously

The operators of several Christmas markets in Berlin are hoping for a season without a Corona lockdown and have started planning.

After the effects of the Corona pandemic threw a spanner in the works of the markets last year, the organisers told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur that they are confident that they will be able to create a Christmas experience for Berliners and tourists this time. In many places, planning has already begun - albeit cautiously.

Operators expect corona-related restrictions

"We haven't heard anything to the contrary from the district yet and have already written to all participants," said an event spokesperson for the Lucia Christmas Market in the Kulturbrauerei in Prenzlauer Berg, for example. "We are prepared for the fact that there will probably be restrictions and requirements. To have to cancel the market completely would be a huge disappointment." The operators of the Christmas markets at the Gedächtniskirche, Alexanderplatz, Späth'schen Baumschulen in Treptow and Winterwelt at Potsdamer Platz are also expecting and planning for Corona-related restrictions.

Concern about economic damage

However, if the Christmas markets are cancelled completely this year, there is a threat of major economic damage. Although alternative jobs had been found for some of the exhibitors last year, many had also found themselves in situations that threatened their existence due to the cancelled Christmas markets, an event spokeswoman for the Christmas market at the Gedächtniskirche announced. Arnold Bergmann, organiser of the Alexanderplatz market and Winterwelt, said: "I don't know if we would have survived last year economically if it hadn't been for the state aid."
