Number of traffic accidents declining

The number of traffic accidents in Berlin decreased significantly in the first five months of this year.

Around 46,000 accidents occurred between January and May 2021, as reported by the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office on Thursday (22 July 2021). That was around six percent fewer accidents than in the same period last year. There was also a decrease in traffic fatalities: 16 people died in traffic accidents in the first five months of this year. In the same period last year, there were 25. The number of seriously and slightly injured also decreased.

However, if one only looks at the month of May, the opposite trend becomes apparent. Here, the number of road accidents rose by more than 13 percent compared to the same month last year to more than 10,600. Seven people lost their lives in road traffic in May alone. Four were in the same month in 2020.
