Universities to open for small groups in June

Berlin wants to gradually reopen its universities to small learning groups. Starting on 4 June, seminars, technical and laboratory courses for up to 25 students will be offered, said Berlin's mayor Michael Müller (SPD) on 26 May 2021.

From 18 June, groups of up to 40 will be possible. The reason for this decision is the decreasing incidence in the capital and progress in vaccination. In the coming winter semester, as much as possible should take place again in attendance at the universities. The planning for this is underway, said Müller. Concrete steps were linked to developments in the pandemic and could not be predicted. A separate vaccination programme for university students is not yet possible due to the lack of vaccine, Müller said.

Concrete steps were linked to developments in the pandemic and could not be predicted. A separate vaccination programme for university students is not yet possible due to the lack of vaccine, Berlin's mayor said.
Prerequisites for participation in small university events from June onwards are to be a vaccination, a previous infection or tests that must not be older than 24 hours. Mandatory masks as well as distance and hygiene rules are to continue to apply to everyone. There are around 200,000 students in Berlin. In addition, there are 25,000 teachers and other university staff. Lectures for the summer semester end in mid-July. So far, almost all events in the pandemic have been held digitally. Müller emphasised that it was important to offer students the opportunity to attend classes in a timely manner. During the pandemic, they had to put up with great stress due to cramped living conditions and the loss of jobs.

Many Berlin universities already have their own testing centres. As of 7 June, vaccination prioritisation is to be abolished nationwide, so that students can also make their own appointments. However, the lack of vaccine remains a hurdle for timely services. Berlin libraries and refectories are also to reopen from 4 June under certain conditions. Food can then be collected. In the libraries, appointments need to be booked, for example, for reference lending and workstations.
