Restaurants, clubs and outdoor pools open again

With a coffee on the terrace or a wheat beer in the beer garden - from Friday, restaurants, clubs and outdoor pools in Berlin will welcome guests again after months of corona-related closures.

For the time being, however, this only applies to the outdoor areas and guests with a negative coronary test and proof of vaccination or recovery. Berlin's innkeepers had been preparing for the openings for days.

More space for outdoor gastronomy

Senator for Economic Affairs Ramona Pop (Greens) announced: "In order to help Berlin's gastronomy businesses restart after the crisis, more outdoor areas for gastronomy will be provided again this year." She said she had asked the districts to allow the expansion of terraces without red tape, as they did in the summer and autumn of 2020.

Beats and beer: Clubs open outdoor areas for gastronomic offerings

Some clubs are also expected to open their outdoor spaces as beer gardens from Friday. Some scene addresses were test centres during the pandemic, so there are opportunities for a test in the surrounding area, as Clubcommission spokesman Lutz Leichsenring explained. The organisation represents about 150 clubs, about a quarter of which have outdoor spaces. "We hope that it will soon be possible to set up dancefloors outside," Leichsenring said.

Whitsun weather remains mixed

The only question is whether Berliners will flock to the bars despite the mixed weather. The Berlin Hotel and Restaurant Association (Dehoga) is also concerned. If the restaurants end up opening only one day a week because of rain and cold, it might not pay off, says deputy general manager Gerrit Buchhorn.

Start of the outdoor pool season with eleven pools

Eleven outdoor and summer pools will open first, including the Humboldthain summer pool, the Wannsee lido, the Prinzenbad in Kreuzberg and the Pankow summer pool. The other 14 pools are to follow by mid-June.
