In view of the imponderables in the Corona pandemic, the event scheduled for early September 2021 could not be "planned responsibly", the industry association gfu as organiser and Messe Berlin announced on Wednesday (19 May 2021). The next IFA will now be held from 2 to 6 September 2022.
As recently as March, the gfu had stuck to this year's date for a presence event. "Our claim is to be the first major international trade fair in Germany," said gfu supervisory board chairman Kai Hillebrandt at the time. Now it was said that the participating companies already had to set trade fair budgets.
Last year there was a kind of mini-IFA with a severely limited number of participants. The technology trade fair CES in Las Vegas limited itself to an online format this January. In the pandemic situation, however, there was a lack of framework conditions that would provide a reliable and binding basis for this.
