The Governing Mayor Michael Müller (SPD) emphasised how important the fight for freedom was: "Berlin as the "City of Freedom" experienced for itself during the blockade that freedom has to be defended and won over and over again." The city would never forget how the Western powers defended its freedom. Occupying powers had become protecting powers. The commitment of the pilots who gave their lives for freedom should not be forgotten.
For almost a year at the end of the 1940s, West Berlin was supplied with millions of tons of food and equipment only by air at great expense because of the Soviet blockade of the three western sectors. The blockade was not ended until 12 May 1949.
