Berlin: Fewest firearms registered by private owners
In comparison to the rest of Germany, Berlin has the fewest firearms registered by private owners. The authorities recorded 14 pistols and rifles per 1,000 inhabitants at the end of 2019.

This puts the capital in last place among all cities and districts. This was the result of extensive research by journalism students at the University of Leipzig and the podcast radio station Detektor.fm. For a four-part series on firearms in Germany, they queried 541 weapons authorities because the National Weapons Register did not publish the figures. According to the survey, a total of more than 5.3 million firearms are registered in Germany. However, the official statistics are partly contradictory. Many registered weapons belong to hunters and members of shooting clubs. In addition, there are other unregistered weapons. Here, too, estimates put the number in the millions.
More gun owners in the countryside
At the end of 2018, according to the Senate, exactly 50,290 private pistols and rifles were officially known to exist in Berlin, which at the time had a population of around 3.6 million. The number is comparatively low for several reasons: In almost all cities, significantly fewer people have guns than in the countryside, where more hunters and hobby shooters live. In East Germany, there are fewer guns because they were rarely allowed in the GDR. And even in the old West Berlin, private gun ownership was largely banned by the Allies.
Most registered weapons in Lower Saxony
According to the survey, there are also very few firearms in Thuringia in the Saale-Orla district (16 weapons/1000 inhabitants) and in Günzburg in Bavaria (17/1000). These are followed by Schwerin, Rostock, Leipzig and Frankfurt am Main. Most registered weapons per capita (190/1000) are registered in the district of Lüchow-Dannenberg in Lower Saxony. The district of Südwestpfalz in Rhineland-Palatinate (186/1000) and Neustadt a. d. Aisch - Bad Windsheim in Bavaria (178) follow close behind.

Weapons licences only issued very rarely
To buy a gun, you need a gun ownership card, which is issued mainly to hunters and marksmen. However, they are still not allowed to carry the weapon in public. A firearms licence is required for this - and it is very rarely issued. Then there is the so-called small firearms licence. This allows you to carry alarm and gas pistols in public.
