Carnival of Cultures in Berlin cancelled
It is one of the biggest street parties in Germany: The Berlin Carnival of Cultures on the Whitsun weekend has been cancelled - just like last year.
The district office of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg has unanimously decided "that due to the Corona pandemic, no large events or festivals can take place in the district in the spring and summer of 2021 in public street areas or green spaces", according to a statement by the district on Friday (22 January 2021). The Carnival of Cultures (Karneval der Kulturen) has been held since 1996, with the multicultural parade and street festival traditionally attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors.
MyFest and gay-lesbian park festival also do not take place
The cancellation also affects the MyFest on 1 May and the gay and lesbian park festival in Volkspark Friedrichshain in the summer. According to the report, the district office does not want to approve such events until the 3rd quarter, which is September. "It is currently not foreseeable when the situation will ease," said district mayor Monika Herrmann (Greens). Even if the number of infections decreases in the warm months, it is not a good idea to invite people to public festivals and large events again - as long as there is no herd immunity.
