Extinction Rebellion announces protest actions in Berlin
Activists of the group Extinction Rebellion have announced new protest actions against environmental destruction and climate change in Berlin next week.
On Monday and Wednesday (October 5 and 7, 2020) demonstrations are planned, on Tuesday a blockade action. The group initially did not disclose details. The Berlin police are aware of the actions of Extinction Rebellion, and the officers have prepared themselves accordingly, a spokeswoman said on Friday.
Demonstrations on Monday and Wednesday
A «Trauerzug der Toten Bäume» («funeral procession of the dead trees») is to begin on Monday at 10 a.m. in front of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture. According to police 1200 participants have been registered. The end point is the Invalidenpark. On Wednesday (3 p.m.) two protest marches with 500 participants each are to start in front of the party headquarters of CDU and SPD under the motto: "The Sea Are Rising - So Are We". The demonstrations are to meet at Potsdamer Platz and then march to Brandenburger Tor.
No mass blockades due to the Corona pandemic
Because of the Corona pandemic, there were small-scale actions of civil disobedience in many cities in Germany in June; the group had originally planned mass blockades at the time. A year ago, several thousand people took part in an action week in Berlin with so-called flash mobs, bicycle demonstrations and bridge and road blockades.
