Mauerpark expansion will open on Friday
The popular Mauerpark in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg is getting much bigger. An expansion area on a former industrial estate in the direction of Wedding will be open to visitors from Friday afternoon (26 June 2020), the Senate Department for the Environment announced on Thursday.

According to this, the park area almost doubles, to almost 15 hectares. The new area is to be a "quiet local recreation oasis as a counterbalance to the lively existing park", it was said. The total costs amount to around 14.1 million euros. The first work had begun in 2016.
Paved surface for the flea market, playground and toilets
The new area features, among other things, large lawns, an avenue and a square with a large granite table, which is intended as a meeting place. More than 200 new trees were planted. The area where the flea market
takes place on Sundays has been paved and will be used for sports during the week. There is also a new playground and a toilet container.
Günther: «More green in a high-density residential area»
Senator for the Environment Regine Günther (Greens) explained that the expansion would create «more green in a highly dense residential area» and «more space for the different needs» of the visitors. But culture, the karaoke events and the flea market also retained their place.
Mauerpark very popular especially at the weekend
Because crowds of people flock to the park on Sundays, especially because of these offers, there have been repeated problems with residents in recent years, especially because of the noise. The Mauerpark
was created along the former Berlin Wall after the fall of the Wall. The expansion completes plans by landscape architect Gustav Lange from the early 1990s.
Mauerpark is a public park in the Prenzlauer Berg district. A former part of the Berlin Wall, the park is popular with people of all ages and turns into a flea market and karaoke stage on weekends.
