According to this, the park area almost doubles, to almost 15 hectares. The new area is to be a "quiet local recreation oasis as a counterbalance to the lively existing park", it was said. The total costs amount to around 14.1 million euros. The first work had begun in 2016.

Paved surface for the flea market, playground and toilets

The new area features, among other things, large lawns, an avenue and a square with a large granite table, which is intended as a meeting place. More than 200 new trees were planted. The area where the flea market takes place on Sundays has been paved and will be used for sports during the week. There is also a new playground and a toilet container.

Günther: «More green in a high-density residential area»

Senator for the Environment Regine Günther (Greens) explained that the expansion would create «more green in a highly dense residential area» and «more space for the different needs» of the visitors. But culture, the karaoke events and the flea market also retained their place.

Mauerpark very popular especially at the weekend

Because crowds of people flock to the park on Sundays, especially because of these offers, there have been repeated problems with residents in recent years, especially because of the noise. The Mauerpark was created along the former Berlin Wall after the fall of the Wall. The expansion completes plans by landscape architect Gustav Lange from the early 1990s.
