Berlin's population grows fast

The number of residents of the capital continued to grow last year. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden on 19 June 2020, 24,700 people were added within one year.

At the end of the year, some 3.67 million people were thus living in Berlin. This was 0.7 percent more than in the previous year. Nationwide, the population grew by 0.2 percent to 83.2 million in 2019. According to the statistics, the development differed from region to region: in percentage terms, Berlin had the highest increase, followed by Brandenburg, Bavaria and Hesse with a respective growth of 0.4 percent. In percentage terms, Saxony-Anhalt suffered the greatest decline in population with a minus of 0.6 percent.
