Shops to open again on Wednesday
Despite the Corona crisis, from this Wednesday 22 April 2020 Berliners will again be able to shop in many stores beyond the food trade.
People are queuing outside a supermarket.
The Berlin Senate decided on Tuesday that stores with a sales area of up to 800 square metres may reopen from the middle of the week. One customer per 20 square meters is permitted, as the senate announced in a resolution on Tuesday. This means that 40 customers may be in a shop with 800 square metres at the same time.
Malls may be opened under certain conditions
This also applies to department stores
and warehouses if they reduce their sales areas accordingly, said Economic Senator Ramona Pop on Tuesday after the Senate session. While in many other federal states shops have been open again since the beginning of the week, the Senate has taken more time to make its decision.
Berlin is also the capital of shopping
There are particularly numerous department stores and shopping centres in the capital, which exceed the prescribed sales area by far and for which separate regulations had to be found. "Admission to shopping centres (malls) must be regulated separately by the operator", the resolution passed by the Senate now states. According to this, only as many people may stay in the shopping centres as the sum of the number of customers permitted for the individual shops would allow.
"This is neither the starting signal nor the invitation to a relaxed stroll through shopping malls"
Pop emphasized that. The measures were designed to ensure that consumers can once again obtain the most basic necessities. "We remain in a crisis situation. Any relaxation must be justified in view of the epidemiological situation and not lead to a second wave of infections."
